How Keto Diets and Dewormers Are Rewriting Canine Cancer Metabolism

Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize in 1931 for showing how cancer cells love glucose, then watched his framework buried for decades. The dogs are pulling it back.
The canine keto story starts with the 2022 study — eight healthy beagles on ketogenic diets, starved sugar-loving cancer cells. This demonstrated the diet creates a metabolically hostile environment for tumors. A similar study known as the KetoPet Sanctuary, followed with 40 dogs on a carb/sugar restricted diets resulted in similar outcomes.
Then came the dewormers.
Fenbendazole and ivermectin function as powerful metabolic disruptors that synergistically attack cancer's glucose addiction in animals. While fenbendazole starves tumor cells by disrupting glucose pathways, ivermectin simultaneously blocks secondary glucose pathways. Together, these repurposed dewormers effectively cut off the tumor's fuel supply, forcing cancer cell death.
The canine case reports demonstrate how two cheap, off-patent veterinary drugs and an animal dietary intervention converge on the same metabolic vulnerability through different mechanisms; dogs are looking at a signal worth chasing.
